A Brown Bear sow and her cub were strolling along the banks of Brooks River, Alaska, when the sow’s instincts kicked in upon seeing a large group of silver salmon clustered in a pool of water. The sow charged into the water at full speed, intending to use her impressive claws to pin down at least one salmon to the river floor. However, she emerged empty-handed.

The image was captured by positioning oneself directly across the river from the bears, carefully observing their movements as they casually walked upriver along the river bank. As soon as the sow spotted the salmon and rushed into the water, the photographer began shooting rapidly, capturing this singular moment in time.
